Swedish newbie intro

Postby Swedish sailor » Tue May 07, 2013 9:09 pm

Hi!
To the best of my knowledge I haven´t any UK relations. So what am I doing on a UK genealogy forum then...?

Well, it´s like this: My illusive grandfather (fathers side) was a Swedish sailor and I have a note in Swedish police records stating he was in Liverpool in the Autumn of 1945. How he got there I don´t know. Maybe on a ship from his home town Gothenburg. Where he went and how long he stayed in Liverpool I don´t know. I do know that in 1946 he was on the m/s GRIPSHOLM, Swedish American Line, as a steward, on the ships first commercial trip to New York after the war.

His Swedish sailors documentation doesn´t list him as working on any Swedish ships in 1945. He got his passport issued to him 7th of September 1945 in Gotheburg. Expiry 7th of September 1950. Number C 2473.

His name was Nils Bo TÖRNQUIST and his date of birth was 7th of July 1911. TÖRNQUIST could also have been spelled TOERNQUIST or TORNQUIST. He signed himself as NB TÖRNQUIST or Bo TÖRNQUIST.

What was the procedures in 1945 when a foreign sailor came to a UK port? Would he be listed in a ships crew manifest and where can I look for such documentations?

He wouldn´t have stayed long in the UK because he was on the GRIPSHOLM the next year and back in Sweden in 1947. Married there in 1948. He did various trips over the next 20 years, mostly on Swedish ships. The last time he signed off in Ipswich in 1969. He died in Denmark 1976.

Thankful for any idea as to how I can go from here.

Hi Swedish Sailor
Welcome to the forum
Velkommen her fra Danmark!! :-)

I have a similar problem - I have some family photo's taken in Sweden (Swedish photographer on the back), I don't know why the relatives concerned were there, or exactly when. There is a family story about someone meeting the King of Sweden, not knowing initially who they were talking to!
