ARC TBC Fishers Building 1841 West Bromwich

Postby geoff3d » Wed Dec 09, 2020 3:45 pm

[Hi I know this is an old post but there still seems no clues on Fishers building. I believe it was in Ryder Green Rd, off the Oldbury Rd. never manage to get clarification?.
From the 1871 Census I see there were a line of habitated buildings Dowells, Fishers etc.
Any info would be helpful. The Censuses

The description for the 1841 census on page 1 says:

"All that part of the parish of West Bromwich comprising the Road from Union Cross to Greets Green Bridge and all back houses on the south side of the Canal to Ryders Green Bridge the road from Ryders Green Bridge to Union Cross Fishers building and all back houses as and including the houses along the canal side to the Vulcan Forge and the houses at the said Forge"

There is a lack of punctuation there but I think if you look at this map https://maps.nls.uk/view/101585824 and start where it says chapel in Greets Green, then the Union Cross was at some time a pub at the junction of Greets Green Road and Oldbury Road.

So if you go from that road junction to Greets Green Bridge (? where Greets Green Road crosses the canal), and then stay south of the canal but go north to Ryders Green Bridge (? where Ryders Green Road crosses the canal), then back to Union Cross - that makes a sort of triangle.

Then comes "Fishers building all the back houses along the canal side to the Vulcan Forge". Not sure about this, but perhaps this is continuing southwards down the canal, towards the Vulcan Foundry?

Hope that is some help
