Name Changing

Postby Dig » Fri Apr 06, 2018 4:58 pm

Hi everyone,

I am trying to find out the parents of an ancestor of mine but the problem is his surname keeps changing! Please see below:

1881 Census
William Golding born 1823 in Oldbury, Worcestershire.
Living at 3 Littlefields, Oldbury.

1871 Census
William Goulding born 1825 in Wellington, Shropshire.
Living at 3 Littlefields, Oldbury.

1861 Census
William Golden born 1826 in Madeley Wood, Shropshire.
Living at Littlefields, Oldbury.

1851 Census
William Golden born 1827 in Madeley Wood, Shropshire.
Living at Littlefields, Oldbury.

Marriage
William Golden and Ann Bate.
13 October 1844.
Residence of William is recorded as Newbury Lane.
Father is recorded as William Golden, Puddler.

1841 Census
William Goldin born 1826 out of county.
Living at Newbury Lane, Oldbury with:
Martha Froxley, Loging House Keeper
Mary Bate, Parish Relief
Henry Hoodfelo, Coal Miner

The only record I think may match William before 1841 is the following baptism:
3rd October 1824
All Saints, Madeley in Shropshire
Father: Blank
Mother: Jane Golden, spinster

Can you please let me know your thoughts on my research so far and how I can build on it.

Thank you :P

I think you just need to be aware that surnames can vary a lot! :?
Change over time as to who wrote the names and as what they heard!
