ARC TBC Kathleen Lilian Carroll

Postby marcus40822 » Sat Sep 24, 2011 9:02 pm

Hmm, a high brick wall for this newbie... I'm trying to trace Kathleen Lilian, born 2nd July 1899 in London (I think) - but there's no trace of her birth with the surname Carroll for that year (through the GRO) or for that matter in 1898 or 1900. There's no mention of a Kathleen Lilian Carroll in either the 1901 or 1911 census. Perhaps her biological father died and her mother remarried John Carroll (whom Kathleen Lilian cites as her father on her two marriage certificates, the first dated 1925 and the second 1934). I remember her saying that her father was the Fire Superintendent at Finchley (possibly), and sure enough both marriage certificates list her father as a "retired brigade officer". She also said that she had a sister, Dorothy, with whom she fell out and lost contact.
Question - is it possible to find all the Kathleen Lilians born on July 2nd 1899 (supposing that the date is correct) without having to order birth certificates for the handful of K.L.s born in the third quarter of that year as listed in the official index)?
Are there other avenues to explore? I've already contacted the City of London Records Dept. for information about fire service personnel, but with no luck so far. And I've done a census/directory search of the address she gives at the time of her first marriage (9, Ockendon Road, Islington), but have drawn a blank.
Happily, from 1925 there's much more information - two marriages and an exciting life in Brazil, and records galore of their voyages back and forth up to 1960. But the early years are frustratingly hidden... am I missing something obvious?
Any tips and pointers would be much appreciated - thank you!

Both of those marriages were registered in Manaos in Brazil and registered via the Consulate.

She must have been travelling with a passport. Have you looked for her application for passport?

When she leaves England in October 1925 and arrives back in July 1926 she puts her address as 9 Ockendon Road London which you say she put on her marriage certificate as well?

It does not appear she is travelling with anybody.

That address does not exist in the 1911 census. House 7a is the last house listed.

I can see she travels back and forth quite a bit with her second husband!

Thanks for your reply, greatly appreciated.
No, I haven't checked with Kew re. her passport application, but will do so now. Lilian didn't have any children so there's no-one to ask - but if I dig deeper I may find out more. Thanks again!

Is this still a Brickwall, or have you solved it?

...yes, still a brick wall! I tried the passports application section at Kew for July/August/Sept. 1925, but as the applications (literally thousands of them) are listed by number and not by name (and my time was limited) I had to abandon my search. Not quite sure what to do next! :? Oh well, I'll keep trying...

Hello Marcus

Some of the London Electoral Rolls have now been added to Ancestry. I've had a quick look and there are quite a few Kathleen Carrolls. Unfortunately, we can't search with a DOB - so it will mean looking through most of them.

Re. the electoral register - I guess I'm stumped as regards Kathleen Lilian as the vote was only extended to women at age 21 in 1928 (she married in 1925, aged 26, and lived from then on in Brazil). I'll look for her father John Carroll instead, who worked for the fire service in north London. I'm particularly interested to know where they lived in the early years of the century... more to follow, I hope!

...I'm still searching! I seem to spend my time bumping into brick walls - though I live in hope! I guess the more elusive Lilian becomes the more I sink my teeth in; I'm a bit like a terrier I guess! If anyone has any fresh ideas, I'd be delighted to hear from them. I cling on, but don't bite! Thank you... :-)

Thanks for the input! I've no date of death for John Carroll unfortunately... the last reference to him is on Lilian's second marriage certificate (1934), cited as father of the bride, rank or profession "Retired Brigade Officer". Lots of John Carrolls around... stumped again!

I have opened up this thread again to see if anybody can help marcus40822, as his original request for help was way back in 2011. As we all know a lot of info has become available on the internet in the intervening years, so can anybody help please.
