Cousins estimate vs Genealogy estimate [Solved]

Postby lorisarvendu » Sat Jul 11, 2020 10:34 pm

I've been corresponding with someone who, according to our research shares the same 2nd Gt Grandmother as me. This would ordinarily mean 3rd cousins, but there are two different 2nd Gt Grandfathers, so from a DNA perspective that would show us as 4th Cousins. However she has recently taken the Ancestry DNA test, which has shown us to be 5th-8th Cousins.
Could anyone advise me as to what this might mean?

Cheers

Dave

it will depend on how much DNA you attain from the matching grandparent any match will have a degree of error their is a tool called DNA painter you put in the length of dna match in cms and it will give you the relationship you could try this

https://dnapainter.com/tools/sharedcmv4
A person should have an opinion on everything, It becomes tact whether you reveal that opinion or not.

Her percentage of DNA shows an 8% probability that she's a 3rd Cousin, which is what the genealogy says. OK so that's a small chance, but it's not zero, so I'll go with that.
