Here's one that's a bit specialised, but it's got me puzzled.

Pretty much every Genealogy website provides Autosomal DNA testing.
That is, the DNA test examines the 22 autosome pairs.

In addition to the Autosomal pairs, there's Y-chromosome DNA (passed down the father-son male line).
And Mitochondrial DNA (passed down the other-daughter female line).

There are specific tests for Y-DNA and Mt-DNA, which Autosomal DNA testing doesn't include.
So Autosomal DNA tests will not identify the direct male or female lines (the two Haplogroups).

My question is, do the Autosomal pairs include the Y-DNA and Mt-DNA ?
So the test will still find relationships down the direct male and direct female lines.
It just won't specifically identify them as the direct male and direct female lines.

Is there somebody really clever out there who knows ?

would of thought all the genetic information in the 23 pair but the test that we order for Autosomal will not look for the Haplogroup markers ?

I would have thought so, too, Peter.

But that's only my own feeling, I was hoping someone could tell me definitively.

Thought I'd better do some digging myself on this so bought 'Tracing Your Ancestors Using DNA' (Ed. Graham S Holton).

Very good if you're looking for something on the subject.

And, yes, the DNA of our ancestors in the direct male and female lines goes into the mixing-pot that is the 22 autosome pairs.
Once here, however, it takes the same chances as the DNA from our other ancestors - being diminished and possibly elimiated over successive generations.
This is why Autosomal DNA is only considered good for tracing DNA matches down to 5-7 generations into the past.

just sent a paternal test of the Y111 so see how far that will go back on my male line, will do the mtdna at a later date doing them now why i can so they will be there hopefully on disc for later generations if they want to pick up where i left off

done my Y111 DNA test and there a wealth of information don't understand it enough at the moment to navigate it but it gave me some interesting facts little to do with family history unless the person is in the same group as you then you know your related on your father side

why the Autosomal is easy the Y dna test i was on about above is much more complicated then the normal one, the Autosomal does help to verify connection but also give you an indication of connection so you can look for the link if you get one done go for the Ancestry one bigger database
