GLYNNE ARMS
Coppice Mill, HIMLEY
It was known locally as “The Siden House” and “The Crooked House”. Siden came from a local Black Country expression Sidden meaning subsidence or Crooked

It was reputedly haunted by a serving wench named Polly.
It was built as a farmhouse in 1765.

The Crooked House was originally known as The Siden House then The Glynne Arms - having been named after the Glynne family who owned the surrounding estate. The pub once formed part of Oak farm Estate, originally as the Oak Farm Mill. The estate came into the Glynne family through the marriage of the Reverend Sir Stephen Glynne of Hawarden Castle to Mary Bennett of Salop.
(Sir STEPHEN GLYNNE ( 1744 - 1780 ), 7th baronet , who was born 12 May 1744 . Educated at Queen's College , Oxford , he entered holy orders, and became rector of Hawarden . In 1779 he m. Mary , daughter of Richard Bennett of Farmcott, Salop . On 1 April following he ruptured a blood-vessel while hunting , and d. immediately. His only child, Sir STEPHEN RICHARD GLYNNE ( 1780 -1815) 8th Baronet inherited
In 1835, Oak Farm was turned into a mining area for coal, iron and clay. Industrial activity continued until 1875 when the associated blast furnaces, collieries, mills and other buildings were eventually sold off, on the death of Sir Stephen. The resulting mining subsidence is what caused the distinctive lean of the pub and caused its name to be changed to 'Crooked House'. It is still in use as a pub (2007), and is very much a local attraction.
“The GLYNNE ARMS, Kingswinford, is situated in the parish of Himley, Staffordshire ….. It is
named after Sir Stephen Glynne - the brother in law of the late Rt. Hon. W. E. Gladstone - to whom
Stephen Richard Glynne, 9th Baronet (22 September 1807 – 17 June 1874)[1] was a Welsh landowner and Conservative Party politician. He is principally remembered as an assiduous antiquary and student of British church architecture. He was a brother-in-law of the Liberal Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone.
Glynne's father,Sir Stephen Glynne , the 8th Baronet died in 1815, aged 35, and at the age of seven Stephen inherited both the baronetcy and the family estates, including Hawarden Castle in Flintshire. His sister Catherine married William Ewart Gladstone, and Gladstone's father, Sir John Gladstone, helped rescue Glynne from near bankruptcy after the failure of Oak Farm brick and iron works near Stourbridge, of which Glynne was part-owner.[3] He was able to resume occupancy of Hawarden only by selling part of the estate, and agreeing to share the castle with William and Catherine.
Stephen Richard Glynne, 9th Baronet (22 September 1807 – 17 June 1874 ) never married, and the baronetcy became extinct on his death. The Hawarden estate and castle was left to his nephew William Henry Gladstone, the eldest son of William and Catherine.
