Thanks.

SRD, could you give a little more info, i.e. any other name in the household, as there are a number of William S White or William White that could fit the bill.
1939. 27 School Road , Hastings C.B., Sussex, William S White, 1st Oct 97, Carpenter Nancy E A White, 9th December 98, Unpaid domestic Kenneth R White, 18th July, 29, at school (Hoile is mothers surname in the birth index)
I did think Nancy was a long shot, that's written her off completely.
I knew there were a lot of possibilities, in 1911 he was a motor mechanic living in his brother Henry's household in Haywards Heath, Sussex and shown as being 33. His birthplace was Chailey in Sussex.
There are 165 William Whites (with variations of first name) coming up but only 22 living in Sussex, 19 of those have a different initial so looking at these three
William White DOB 21 Apr 1877 Married Forestry Labourer. 154 Chyngton Lane, Seaford U.D., Sussex, England Wife Martha J
William White DOB 12 Aug 1878 Widowed Postman (retired) The Offlicence, Midhurst R.D., Sussex, England
William White DOB 10 Oct 1879 Married (Hard to read this bit) Late Capt ??? Artillery (Retired) then another line which is damaged. Dunchlane Crabtree Lane, Worthing R.D., Sussex, England Wife Elizabeth
There is a tree on Ancestry that has his wife as Nancy Hoile??
William Stephen White. Birth, Chailey, Sussex Army. 2/11/15, age 38 , 3? RAF 1/4/18 Occupation, Mechanic Person to be informed of casualties, W White, South Street, Chairley, Sussex, father Height, 5ft 4 inch, chest, 34 inch Transfer to REF reserve, 12/2/19 D? Discharged 20/4/20
Oh bother, that South Street address for a father William does point to my William as does the trade, but the 1939 of him & Nancy states D.o.B. 1897 and him being a carpenter whereas he was actually born in 1878 and had been, up to 1923, a motor mechanic, I must see if I can find that army record.
