I have received a marriage certificate today for my grandparents William Albert Floyd and Bertha Benson Married 4th April 1925
William Albert Floyd, 21 years, Bachelor, Motor-man, 8 Beswick Street, West Derby
Father: Frederick Arthur Floyd, Furniture Porter
Bertha Benson, 21 years, Spinster, House-maid, 4 Gillow?? (can't read it) Terrace, Everton
Father: Thomas Benson (deceased), Carter

I was unsure whether my great grandfather was William Floyd or Frederick Albert Floyd
Now that I have the information can anyone help to get back any further?

Is there a birth for Mary Bessie Higgins or as William Francis was born 1901 and she didnt marry Frederick Arthur until 1904 could she possibly have been married before?

I have just received the marriage certificate for Frederick Arthur Floyd and Mary Bessie Higgins!!

Can anyone help me any further with this. I have absolutely no information as yet on Frederick's father as I had no idea who he was and the same for William Higgins, although its the Floyd family i'm concentrating on to begin with as that's my name

That would explain why no one could find his birth!
And also the two censuses I have missing for Frederick are 1881 and 1901!
Does this mean that Frederick was never a real Floyd? If so, then it looks like this is the end of my Floyd name Could he put the name Floyd on the marriage certificate legally if he was actually Woods??

I have also found what Jimmy found on the 1881 census.

Thankyou That has actually proved it then. I noticed on the 1881 census that John William Floyd is down as a lodger. I thought maybe Frederick WAS his child but she was with the head of the family James Charnley as he is "son" and the relationship is usually to the head of the family isnt it?? but then from the 1871 she is married and Frederick is there as son so neither John William Floyd nor James Charnley were his father!! His parents must have been Thomas & Elizabeth Woods.
But John William Floyd is down as father on Frederick's marriage certificate??

Oh just noticed that Frederick isnt there in 1871 but obviously as his birth was reg Sep 1871 after the census.
