Census Records

Postby Forty_Two » Fri Feb 16, 2024 10:53 am

I presume, after searching (google) that there is no FREE access to the 1861 census?
I can also see the offer of 'free' trial on some pay sites (free then £70!!!). The thing that concerns me is that these sites come up with half a dozen likely hits but want money to see them and I suspect that I will pay the money and those likely hits will turn out to be spurious.
I would appreciate advice on how I can get free or cheap access to the 1861 Census records?

Hi Jimmy, Thanks for the offer of help.

Joseph Guinne b.1843 Ireland, married Mary Jane Magill on 26th June 1869 giving their address as Mulliner Street, Little Bolton, Lanchashire. The marriage certificate states that his father's name was Hugh Guinne and was deceased. To better identify Joseph Guinne (in Ireland) I would like to know his mother’s name. As he was just 23 in 1869 I am hoping that in 1861 at 18 years old he was living with his parents (mother) in Lancashire. I have notes stating that Mary Jane Magill shows on the 1861 census as living as a lodger at Soveriegn Street, Bolton. That same marriage certificate states that Mary Jane Magill’s father was John McGill a bookbinder.

Whilst, for a long time, I have presumed that Joseph and Mary came over from Ireland with their parents it could be possible that they came over alone in their teens e.g. why is Mary at 19yo living as a lodger and not with her parents?

I can't see any thing that stand out in 1861 for Joseph, could this be Mary Jane Magill.

Isabella Kearns 45. Head.
Eliza Kearns 19. Daughter.
Mary Jae McGill 19. Lodger. wool damper.
Mary Hanon 19. Lodger.

Hi Jimmy

Re: Mary Jane McGill 19. Lodger. wool damper. . . . yes that is the girl Joseph married in 1869. As they both seem to appear from nowhewre and appear alone it is looking like these two, as young people, made the trip over here without their parents. That is difficult to get my 21stC head around but might have been 'normal' in the 1860's.

I noticed Joseph and Mary had a child Robert, could this be Mary's parents in 1861.

Hi Jimmy . . . Jospeh and Mary's child Robert (b.1882) is my grandfather who I never met (he died in 1931 (droped dead in front of my father when he was 7 years old)).
