I am getting really muddled with Henry, How many times did he marry if at all? Found 1 marriage to Mary Ann Monk.

But then how many children did he have ?

do we have 2 joseph Bulpins both carpenters.

cos...Joseph and Louisa have charles b 1833 and Henry b 1835....mother dies in 1838
3 boys...Henry and charles and a James are on 1841 but not with father.... they seem to be in district bridgwater union workhouse in 1841...
so if this is Joseph age is out ...but address is right....but kids not with him cos in workhouse....nice!! poor kids.

seems like he changed his name to Bulfin on journey to canada

marries in 1902? and lives till 1983

an ancestry tree has the wrong info as do few others re Henry .....the father..

wonder why Henry put kids in childrens home in 1881 3 of his kids cos frances mother dies.

Then Henry marries Mary Monk in 1892 .....and then decides to look for them in ...was it 1895.....!!

by then they were on a boat to Canada...

Did parents give up all rights if kids went in homes/

so if this is Joseph age is out ...but address is right....but kids not with him cos in workhouse....nice!! poor kids.

I don't think it was unusual for children to go into the workhouse or an orphanage if their mother died, it meant the father could carry on working, especially if his work required anti-social hours or working away from home, and, despite the images conjured up by Dickens, most workhouses were considerably better than living as paupers outside the system. Ok they were strict by modern standards but for children not that different to boarding school, they got fed, clothed and had medical services. Yes they had to work as they got older, but then they would have had to do that home.
Even comparatively recently such things weren't unusual - just after WW1 my wife's mother and her siblings were sent to a private Quaker orphanage when their mother died, their father couldn't work as a cabbie and look after them and anyway had no knowledge of how to look after the children.
