Some advice please.. Missing a sister!

Postby Mrs.S2012 » Sat Feb 22, 2020 7:00 pm

Hi all,
I'm back onto the family tree after a bit of a break.. starting again with my nan on my mum's side.. Barbara Douglas b1934. Her parents were Emily Hales and Herbert Douglas. According to my mum she had four sisters, Rose, Dolly, Pearl and Peggy. I have found Rose Pearl and a Margaret (assuming this is Peggy) plus another sister Mary, who died, but can't find a Dorothy. I think she was Dorothy F Douglas as I found a marriage record for this person later on to Frank Baker (My mum told me she married a Frank Baker so this is her) but I can't find any birth record for a Dorothy Douglas with a mother's maiden name of Hales? So I'm wondering if she was my nan's sister after all.
She was older then my nan I think so could have been born anytime between 1921 and 1934, Probably in the London area as this was where the family lived.
Not sure if I'm just missing something or if there is somewhere else I can look?
Any advice welcomed!
Sarah

Hi

Were the family in the UK in 1939?

As far as I am aware, yes. found an entry on the 1939 register for Luton for Emily Douglas and a Rose E Douglas (mother and sister?) other entries were closed.

Might she be registered as Hales?

It's possible I guess? I'll do some more digging.. I suspect she may not have been their child? I don't understand why all the other sisters are registered and she isn't.

As SRD said, perhaps Dorothy was born before marriage? So under maiden name? Remember not all is transcribed and birth may be not in the same area?
GRO records go 1919 and then the next 1984.

Very possible, my mum is going to see what paperwork she has on the family and send it to me. Fingers crossed there will be some clues!

I am not sure how you are getting on or if this can help but I had great problems with a birth in 1918.
The writing on the certificate must have been terrible as Olive was down as Clive and the surname had a u replaced with an n (looking on bmd site)
I knew the birth had taken place and eventually found it (can't remember how though!). I did know the district so this must have helped.
