Appreciate some help

Postby Katykat » Tue Aug 20, 2019 2:34 pm

I have Maria Pugh ( 1799) married Thomas Sherwood in 1819 in Shrewsbury. I cant find any children until George born 1832 ( he is my ancester) Thomas died in 1841. In 1861, Maria is at George's house for the census, I think because George's wife had just given birth. Maria is now called Maria Bourne, wife of an innkeeper. By 1871, she is listed again as a widow. I cant find any record of a marriage to Mr Bourne, or of his name. Ive even looked through all the Bournes on the 1861 census in Shropshire but nothing maches. He probably has a public house.

Edited: although it is odd because Ellen Bourne seems to be in the neighbourhood in 1851, down as a widow and living with her daughter Emma and Emma's husband. You will need to have a good dig around :-) Perhaps Ellen is John's sister or sister in law

So I don't know... Did Maria Sherwood marry this older John Bourne? The elderly John seems to have died in 1865, but he didn't leave a lot of money and mentions his daughter and grandson for administration of the will

From FreeBMD

Marriages Dec 1841
BOURNE John Shrewsbury 18 217
JONES David Shrewsbury 18 217
JONES Letitia Shrewsbury 18 217
LEE Martha Shrewsbury 18 217
SHERWOOD Maria Shrewsbury 18 217
TITLEY Thomas Shrewsbury 18 217

Up to now, I am probably going to discount this one. This John Bourne and Maria Sherwood are both listed as 21 yrs old, although Maria is already a widow. Unless their ages are not transcribed correctly. However, my Maria would have been about 43 in 1841 and there is no evidence that she had any more children within her 2nd marriage.

Perhaps someone will check on FMP. Maybe it just means over 21.

Could be Gardener. Although John Bourne s status is single which is more likely in a 21 yr old rather than a 61 yr old. But you never know.

Grangers, does this mean that James Bourne was Johns father and William Pugh was Marias?

And Ive found another link. Mariah Pugh, b Nov 1797 in Easthope, Shropshire to William and Lucretia Pugh. Theres the name Lucretia again, surely not just a coincidence. Lutwyche Hall is in the village of Easthope. On all Marias census forms she states her birthplace was Lutwich. Perhaps her father was an employee there. Im sure this is the same person which means another generation found.
