Any more detail available?

Postby Katykat » Wed Apr 03, 2019 1:50 pm

Anyone able to find out where in Carmarthenshire Ann ( nee Hugh) was born. I’m trying to find her birth record. I’ve found 2 possibles, both born in Llangendeirne in 1802 but not sure I can pin it on any of them.

Towin Bach seems to have been a common where Burry Port harbour was built in 1832.

Thanks folks. This sounds like the right one. The date is flexible- 1802-1806. They were married in Pembrey too.

I’m still delving into this family. I’ve recorded Ann Hugh's father as David Hugh, but where did this information come from? And is there any more ? I can’t find any more about David Hugh ie DOB, birthplace etc. I’ve found a marriage on Freereg between David Hugh and Frances Dennis in Pembrey in June 1805. If I had to guess, I’d say this is the one, as Ann was baptised in May 1806, but there is a marriage between a Margaret Harry and a David Hugh in Pembrey in Nov 1806. Does anyone else “take a guess” & hope you have the correct people?

If you publish your tree online sometimes taking a guess throws up a contact who, if nothing else, can prove your guess was wrong, but ultimately, if you want your tree to be accurate, guessing isn't really acceptable.
All you can do is to continue researching both sets of family in the hope that something will turn up to tilt the balance one way or the other, otherwise it's just one of those brickwalls we all have somewhere in our trees. For me it's my mother's paternal line that vanishes in the Channel Islands, presumably their records were amongst those destroyed during WWII.

Very well put SRD.

Katykat, I got the baptism for Ann Hugh from the Parish Register which is on Find My Past.

I noted elsewhere that people put up trees on places like Ancestry specifically to test theories they have no proof of in the hope that others will show where confirmation can be found or errors shown. That seems a little dangerous to me as others may not be aware that these are only tests and may use them as 'proof' of incorrect theories so if one were to set up such a test tree I hope it would be made clear that it is meant as research and not as definitive.
Personally if I have an entry that I can't confirm I always put "possible" in the description section, though that only works if the site publishing the entry also has the ability to show descriptions.
