Now I’m trying to figure out about the MCCARTHY family who were in Finsbury 1881 and Holborn 1891.

I have images of the two censuses.

Census 1891 22 Johns Mews, Holborn (St Andrew Holborn Above The Bars And St George The ...)
Michael MCCARTHY Head m 54 G Laborer [sic], employed, b Ireland Tralee
Ann MCCARTHY Wife m 51 b Ireland CoCork
Honora MCCARTHY Daug s 30 Booksewer B, employed, b London St Giles
John MCCARTHY Son s 23 G Laborer, employed, b London Holborn
Michael J MCCARTHY Son s 15 b London Holborn
Ann MCCARTHY Daug s 12 b London Holborn

I know Michael J was known as “Joe” within the family.

Census 1881 22 Fulwood Rents, St Andrews, Finsbury
Michael MCCARTHY Head m 42 Labourer b Ireland Kerry
Ann MCCARTHY wife m 40 b Ireland Kerry
Mary MCCARTHY daur 16 Servant domestic b Middx St Andrew
John MCCARTHY son 14 Painter b Middx St Andrew
Nelly MCCARTHY daur 11 Scholar b Middx St Andrew
Joe MCCARTHY son 5 b Middx St Andrew
Ann MCCARTHY daur 2 b Middx St Andrew
-------
Also at 22 Fulwood Rents, as the next entry,
William MCCARTHY Head m 63 Labourer, b Ireland Cork
?Mary? MCCARTHY Wife m 60 b Ireland Cork
Nelly MCCARTHY daur m 26 Servant domestic b Middx Field Lane
Annie MCCARTHY daur ?? 22 Servant domestic b Middx Field Lane
(end of page – I don’t know if that family continued on next page, but then, I don’t know if they are related, or whether it is just that both families rented a room in the same property).

So from this, for the family that I know is related, I have children
Honora b ca 1860-61 St Giles, London
Mary b ca 1865 St Andrew, Holborn
John b ca 1868 St Andrew, Holborn
Nelly/Ellen b ca 1870 St Andrew, Holborn
Michael J/Joe b ca 1876 St Andrew, Holborn
Ann/Anne b 1878 St Andrew, Holborn /St Luke (alternate spelling & info from other sources)

BUT when looking for possible births on GRO, I don’t find many plausible candidates for their mother’s maiden name: only a couple of MCCARTHYs with consistent mmns appear reasonably consistent even for three births at approximately the right date without darting around London in an implausible way:

mmn WELSH has MCCARTHY, Ellen b1869 J Quarter in St Giles
MCCARTHY, Mary Ann b 1863 J Quarter in St Giles
MCCARTHY, John b 1866 J Quarter in St Giles

mmn CONNOR has
MCCARTHY, Michael b 1876 M Quarter in Holborn
MCCARTHY, John b 1866 M Quarter in St Giles or 1866 D Quarter Holborn
And MCCARTHY, Ellen (mmn CONNARS) b 1869 S Quarter in Holborn

Either way, what about the other 3 children on the 1881/1891 census? Why can’t I find a birth record for them? How do I find out whether Ann’s maiden name was CONNOR, WELSH, or something else, when I don’t know which of the many McCARTHY children born on about the right dates in/around London were the relatives I’m looking for (c9 Honoras found, c32 Nellies, c13 Michaels, c26 Ann/similar, c56 Marys, c54 Johns). What other tactics do I need to use?

Any advice very welcome.

Update: I have just found that Michael Joe married as "Joseph Michael" (1898).

Thanks, BCW.

I had spotted Annarah, but hadn't realised she might be Honorah, so to me she was just yet another one of 28 "McCARTHY/CONNOR" (or so) children in StGiles/Holborn born 1858-1891 who I had spotted. But now I can see "Annarah" and "Honorah" might be different ways of writing the same name when pronounced with an Irish accent (and we know that Mrs McC came from the west of Ireland from the census...).

I had seen Ann, but am wary of including an "O'CONNOR" in with the "CONN?R"s - is it wishful thinking, I wonder. I guess I will have to get certs to check out...

But I hadn't spotted Mary Ann at all. The space in the "MC CARTHY" for her had meant she didn't come up in my searches for "McCarthy". Thanks for ferreting her out for me!

So, the gaps might have been filled.

I know there must have been at least two mothers with maiden names of "CONNOR" or similar having children in that part of London on relevant dates, and need to check out Ann, because if she is really from a different family that puts a spanner in the works, but it is starting to look like I have a sensible direction for starting to pay for certificates for this branch... ...when I get through the backlog enough to make it sensible.

Thanks again,

Ben
