That's amazing.

Can I ask how you are getting this info? Is it a subscription to Ancestry?

Do you think the Charles/Hannah Hum's at Gaydon are the same famiy as those at Lighthorne? Perhaps they moved?

Thanks again

So, if I have not lost the plot entirely I think that Charles Hum* was baptised at Gaydon and Chadshunt 7 Sep 1794, parents Charles and Hannah.
He married Mary Lewis 5 Dec 1816 at Offchurch and they had the following children:

Joseph 27 Dec 1818
Edmund 26 Nov 1820
George 6 Apr 1823
Eliza 2 Oct 1825
Charles 24 Aug 1828
Lucy Ann 5 Feb 1832
Jane 17 Nov 1833 [bur 19 Aug 1834]
Henry 13 Mar 1836

Then Charles dies:
burial Charles Humphries abt 1794 Lighthorne 31 Aug 1837

Which leaves John aged 22 and living with Mary in the 1841 census. I can't find his baptism, or find him in the 1851 census.
The 1841 marriage for John seems to be John born 1814. Lucy as the witness has me worried because she would be quite young, aged 10 in the 1841 census.

-----------
Yes, I think that Charles and Hannah moved.
It is all from Ancestry.

Lighthorne and Gaydon seem to be only two or three miles apart so the family may have moved or just switched churches for baptisms.
The missing John may have been baptised somewhere other than Lighthorne I suppose... (sound of light dawning) it was not uncommon for first child to be baptised in the mother's parish, even if some distance away.

From Familysearch:

John Humphries
England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975
christening:
22 June 1817
OFFCHURCH,WARWICK,ENGLAND
father:
Charles Humphries
mother:
Mary

Offchurch was where Charles and Mary married :-)

And I think this might be his burial

Name: John Humphries
Birth Year: abt 1818
Parish: Lighthorne
Burial Date: 17 May 1842
Burial Age: 24

which would explain why I can't find him in the census.

The only mystery left is Lucy who witnessed the other John's marriage

I might be confused but could John have fathered those kids if he died in 1842?
Some of them must have been conceived after that death date of 1842?

EDIT - Just realised you are referring to another John...

It is confusing. Going by birth years then I think John who married Elizabeth, and had the kids, was probably the son of Charles and Hannah. John the son of Charles and Mary (in the 1841 census with his widowed mother) may have died in 1842.
But like I say, that leaves Lucy who witnesses John and Elizabeth's wedding in 1841. It would be odd if she was John's 10 year old niece. But I can't see any other Lucy around.

It's absolutely fascinating isn't it - and even thrilling!
I'm hooked!

By the way I've got photos of George C Humphries born 1870 and his wife Alice. He was Henry's son. I've also got some documents such as a 1924 copy of one of his son's birth certificates and letters dated 1900 from the vaccination department requiring access to their children.

One little nugget I discovered was that Henry's daughter, Sarah Ann Humphries b 1868 had an illegitimate son. Edwin. He was cared for by his Grandparents because Sarah was in service. She later married Harry Reuben West and had at least 2 more kids.

I love the little glimpses of family life that the census provides, such as the detail you provided of Lucy visiting her sister Eliza on the night of the census. Possibly staying to help look after the two toddlers much as my daughters do now.

Thanks again for your help.

Ive just noticed that Ancestry is showing a Charles Humphris born abt 1794 in Lighthorne and in the 1851 census he is living in Ashow, Warwickshire aged 57??
He has a daughter named Elizabeth.
Who is he?
I can only see headlines so can't dig any deeper unfortunately.

Just calling yourself widowed don't make it so, I've got an instance of what must have been the wife moving in with a new fella, husband calls himself widower in subsequent census but wife is alive and kicking after he died when she married the new fella. It was the children that showed me the answer, she took the young ones with her but the older two boys stayed with their father.

Argh!

Baptism
Name: Elizabeth Humphries
Parish: Ashow
Baptism Date: 23 Feb 1817
Father's name: Charles Humphries
Mother's name: Mary Humphries

Marriage
Name: Hannah Humphries
Birth Year: abt 1819
Age: 21
Spouse Name: Daniel Rose
Spouse Age: 22
Marriage or Bann Date: 18 Jan 1840
Event Type: Marriage
Parish: Ashow
Father Name: Charles Humphries
Spouse Father Name: Thomas Rose

1841 Ashow
Charles Humphries 45
Elizabeth Humphries 20
Mary Humphries 3

Name: Elizabeth Humphries
Birth Year: abt 1817
Age: 28
Spouse Name: George Hassam
Spouse Age: 28
Marriage or Bann Date: 3 Nov 1845
Event Type: Marriage
Parish: Ashow
Father Name: Charles Humphries
Spouse Father Name: Richard Hassam

1851 Ashow
Charles Humphris 57 born Lighthorne
Elizabeth Huson dau 34 born Ashow
Mary Huson gdau 13 born Ashow
Charles Rose gson 5 Mo born Radford

marriage
Name: Elizabeth Hassan
[Elizabeth Humphries]
Gender: Female

Marriage Date: 5 Feb 1855
Marriage Place: Ashow,Warwick,England
Father: Charles Humphries
Spouse: Charles Lee

1861 Ashow
Charles Humphris 67
Mary Hassam 23

then it gets complicated

1861 Radford Semele
Daniel Rose 43
Hannah Rose 42 born Lillington
George Cooper 15 stepson born Harbury
Charles Rose 10 son born Radford Semele
Jane Rose 5 dau ditto

Spouse Name: Daniel Rose
Spouse Age: Full Age
Marriage or Bann Date: 18 Nov 1855
Event Type: Marriage
Parish: Harbury
Father Name: Richard Rench
Spouse Father Name:

-------------------
So this Charles Humphries was born abt 1894 at Lighthorne.
He had daughters:
Hannah born abt 1819, married Daniel Rose in 1840. Perhaps died and Daniel married Hannah (Rench) Cooper
Elizabeth born abt 1817, married George Hassan in 1845, and Charles Lee in 1855

This could be Charles' marriage
Name: Charles Humphries
Spouse Name: Mary Walter
Marriage or Bann Date: 16 Oct 1815
Event Type: Marriage
Parish: Ashow

but no parents on there so I have no idea who he was but two Charles's I think

Charles Humphries marriage: 16 October 1815 Ashow,Warwick,England spouse: Mary Walter

Charles Humphries marriage: 5 December 1816 Offchurch,Warwick,England spouse: Mary Lewis

SRD is quite right that saying you are a widow doesn't make you one. Mary remarried in Lighthorne though and it must have been a small parish judging by the infrequency of the marriages there. I don't think she could have married so soon in the parish church if her husband had only hopped off.

Sorry I haven't responded - I've been working and also trying to untangle the web!
Unfortunately, it's getting more tangled each time I look at it...

For example, here's a wedding of two Humphriss's!

George Humphriss born 1863 - 34yrs Bricklayer
married
Ellen Marie Humphriss (spinster name same as married name) Domestic servant 29yrs born 1868

His father was William Humphriss deceased labourer
Her father was Job Humphriss - Woodman
Witnesses were Enoch? Humphriss and Alice Humphriss

What hope is there!!

Thanks to FindMyPast's free weekend, I've got this question for you...

The 1841 census shows 2 Hannah Humphriss's.
Both born in 1771, one is living with a Jane Prew in Lighthorne and the other is in the workhouse, Southam Union. That is the parish in which Lighthorne lies.

Could it be the same woman - perhaps she had left the workhouse but was still on the list handed to the census officer?
It seems too much of a coincidence otherwise. Perhaps the workhouse Master was cooking the books?

Another question...

The 1841 census for Southam shows a Jno Kemp and his wife Selvia and a son, Thomas.
Jno ?? is down as an Innkeeper of a place in the High Street.
The thing I don't really understand is that there are about 11 women also listed at that address but they have no names and they are down as NK (Not known) - they are aged from 25 to 45.
Is it what I think it is?

Possibly, but they may have been itinerant workers or gypsies.
Looking at wiki's page on Southam it shows that the local spring was supposed to have healing powers so they may have been visitors to the Well.
Also, Southam was a coaching town so they may have been passengers.
