Charles Humpfries/Humphries/Humphreys?

Postby AndyHumphriss » Thu Feb 12, 2015 8:26 pm

I am trying to find the birth, marriage and death date of Charles Humphreys. I also need details of his parents.
He was married to Mary Humphreys (Nee Lewis born 1801)

Mary Lewis and Charles Humpfries married 5/12/1816 - Offchurch.
Charles was possibly from parish of Hemlingham but I couldn't read it properly.

There are a number of options for his death date:
possibly 31/8/1838 aged 43. Born 1795?
Or possibly Charles Humphris 6/5/1827 aged 60 – born 1767?
But according to freebmd it was march 1839 in Southam.

They had the following children at the 1841 census but Mary was widowed by then:
John Humphrey – 22yrs – son – Ag Lab
Edmund – 20 yrs – Ag Lab -
Charles – 13yrs
Lucy Ann – 10yrs
Henry – 5yrs (My direct descendant)

Mary went on to marry Thomas Leach October 12th 1841 – her father listed as Joseph Lewis.

Can you help?

A person should have an opinion on everything, It becomes tact whether you reveal that opinion or not.

Thanks for your interest.
Unfortunately, I haven't got that info and the free access has finished at Ancestry.co.uk.
I am sure I would have recorded it if it was included.

All I got was that Joseph Lewis was Mary's Father and that was on the record of her 2nd marriage, to Thomas Leach.

For the first marriage I read Charles's parish as Honingham. They both made their mark.
Witnesses were George Smart (mark) and Mary Chambers (signed, and I am not sure of the surname).

Not much help there.

Name: John Humpheys
Parish: Lighthorne
Baptism Date: 30 Jan 1814
Father's name: Charles Humpheys
Mother's name: Hanner Humpheys

So perhaps there are two Charles Humphreys at Lighthorne?

It is just odd that Charles is never down as deceased

Name: Lucy Ann Humphres
Birth Year: abt 1832
Age: 20
Spouse Name: Thomas Mackought
Spouse Age: Full Age
Marriage or Bann Date: 23 Nov 1852
Event Type: Marriage
Parish: Lighthorne
Father Name: Charles Humphres
Spouse Father Name: John Mackought

Baptisms
John&Hannah
George 19 May 1805
James 5 Mar 1809
Jane 7 July 1811
John 30 Jan 1814

John &Mary
Joseph 28 Dec 1818
Edmund 26 Nov 1820
George 6 Apr 1823
Eliza 2 Oct 1825
Charles 24 Aug 1828
Lucy Ann 5 Feb 1832
Jane 17 Nov 1833 [bur 19 Aug 1834]
Henry 13 Mar 1836

so either two Charles Humphreys or one who remarried? I meant John here

burials

Hannah Humphies abt 1771 Lighthorne 4 Jun 1851 (think she might be on the census) Yes, think she is aged 80 in 1851 and living nextdoor to the 1814 John, born Gaydon
Chas Humphris abt 1767 Lighthorne 6 May 1827 (this is from the handwritten record)
Charles Humphreys abt 1747 Lighthorne 17 Jun 1827 (think this is mis-transcribed)
Charles Humphries abt 1794 Lighthorne 31 Aug 1837

I think there were two of them. and the one who died in 1837 looks a good match given that the youngest child was baptised in 1836

Sorry to throw it all at you like that!
If you can get access to Ancestry then there seem to be plenty of parish records on there for Lighthorne and Gaydon.
I think all you can do is the hard slog of finding all the Hum*s on the 1841 and 1851 census in Lighthorne. Then try to connect them together. I seem to have got John and Charles mixed up at some point!

Thanks so much Gardener.

I too was very confused by the fact that Charles was never described as deceased on the docs relating to his children but his wife, Mary, is definitely a widow in 1841.

You list the children of John and Mary - did you mean Charles?
If so, have you missed John from the list of Charles and Mary's children?

You have identified more children than I found. Perhaps they show up on the 1851 census and I might have missed that.

I was convinced John Humphries, son of Charles and Mary, married Elizabeth Webb - 9/8/1841. Lucy, I think she is his sister, is witness.

I think I got a bit confused! I'll look at it later and re-post once I have checked it. I should never do anything before coffee.

I think this might be Lucy in 1851

1851 Gaydon
Richard Craddock 26
Eliza Craddock 25 born Lighthorne
Eliza Craddock 3
Henry Craddock 1
Lucy Humphry 19 visitor born Lighthorne

Marriages Dec 1846
Craddock Richard Southam 16 745
Humphreys Eliza Southam 16 745

----------------------------
Then there is this marriage

1841 Aug 3rd
John Humpries full age bach lab Lighthorne Charles Humphries lab

Witnesses Richard Ples??? (mark) Lucy Humphriss (signed)

is this John in 1851?
1851 Lighthorne
John Humphress 37 born Lighthorne
Elizabeth Humphress 37
Ellen Humphress 9
Emma Humphress 7
Ann Humphress 5

this John would have been born abt. 1814 which fits with the John, son of Charles and Hannah.
I can't find the baptism of any John to fit with that 1841 census entry (aged 22). Did you find one?
