The Billingsly/Walker Walkabout

Postby KimD » Thu Oct 09, 2014 10:20 pm

I am an amateur researcher in Australia and need assistance with a few English ancestors who have 'gone walkabout'.
My interest here is in Rev. James Walker b. 1793? in Epwell? and Fanny Billingsley b. 1799 in Eynsham, Oxfordshire.
They married in Eynsham 1824 and moved to Somerset.
Then James received an offer he couldn't refuse and they arrived in Australia 1841 with 8 children. Their sons became government officials of note e.g. Robert Cooper Walker (Head State Library NSW), Philip Billingsely Walker (Head Telegraph) and Richard Cornelius Walker CMG Esq.(Principle Under Secretary NSW.)

FANNY ELIZABETH BILLINGSLEY 1799 - 1887
The family story goes that Fanny is descendant of William Billingsley of the porcelain 'Billingsley Rose' fame but I can't make the connection.
Fanny's father was John..I think...
I have found a John Billingsley 1747 -1813 who was a famous Agriculturalist which fits as James loved Botany and was published - and it passed to his son Robert in Australia. There is also another candidate who is more likely to be Fanny's father; John Billingsley who lived and died in Eynsham 1813. I even think I have another who was a religious reformer which also fits. are they the same man?

Rev. James Walker M.A abt 1793 - 1854
I have no information that fits neatly on James' parents. I think he was born to Robert and Elizabeth in Epwell 1793. James Walker was educated at Oxford and ordained there 1819 and married Fanny in 1824. I have no other clues as to his siblings or his parentage.

I would appreciate any help you can give. I have plenty of interesting information on this couple in Australia and the 9 children they raised here and am more than happy to share. One daughter is an enigma but that's not surprising! Tracing the women has been very difficult.

Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing from you
Kind regards
Kim

A person should have an opinion on everything, It becomes tact whether you reveal that opinion or not.
