Letitia Harris Powell

Postby yerffej » Thu Nov 28, 2013 8:27 am

Hi
After recently coming into contact with my mother's cousin in Liverpool she has been able to confirm that the Letitia Powell I was looking for (her grandmother and my great grandmother) is Letitia Harris Powell born in 1890 in Kirkdale, Lancs.
There was some confusion as there appeared to be two Letitia Harris born the same year, the other born in Kirkham
My mother's cousin has confirmed that the following information is correct for Letita:

Birth:
Births Sep 1890.
Powell Letitia Harris. W. Derby. 8b. 354.

POWELL Letitia H, 1890 Kirkdale. Lancashire. Liverpool. KIRK/70/35.

1901 Census:
3, Miranda Road, Bootle, Lancashire
JONES, Letitia Head Married F 60 1841
Carnavan
Carnarvonshire
JONES, William Son Single M 24 1877 Tailor
Deaf & Dumb From Childhood Carnavan
Carnarvonshire
POWELL, Letitia Grand Daughter Single F 11 1890
Bootle
Lancashire

Marriage:
Marriages Jun 1912
Heighway William W Powell W.Derby 8b 871
Powell Letitia H Heighway W.Derby 8b 871

She appears to be living with her grandmother in 1901.

My mum's cousin said that Letitia's parents were Ann Jones and William Powell.

Can anyone help me find Letitia in the other censuses please?
Thankyou

Hi I have the information you asked for. She said:

William Powell is on my Grandmothers birth certificate as a "Baker Journeyman", he is also, named as a Baker on my Grandparents marriage certificate.

My Grandmother (Letitia Harris) was born on 26 May 1890 the address is 6 North Dingle U.S.D. I have the certificate.

Hope this helps! Thanks

So (trying to make some sense of this), it goes like this maybe?

1889 possible marriage:
Dec 1889
CLARKIN Michael W. Derby 8b 960
Deegan Annie West Derby 8b 960
Jones Ann West Derby 8b 960
Powell William W.Derby 8b 960

JONES Ann POWELL William West Derby, Register Office or Registrar Attended Liverpool REG_WD/123/114

1890 birth:
Births Sep 1890.
Powell Letitia Harris. W. Derby. 8b. 354.

1891 census:
116 Lamb St, Kirkdale.
Thos Maran 34.
Mary Maran 38.
Matthew Maran 5.
Thomas Maran 4.
John Maran 1.
Joseph Harvey 27.
Letitia Griffitts 45. Mar. Caernarvon, Wales.
Annie Powell 21. Mar. Caernarvon, Wales.

1894 marriage GRIFFITHS Letitia. JONES William.

Liverpool, Register Office or Registrar. Attended. Lancashire. Liverpool. REG_LP/219/46.

1901 Census:
3, Miranda Road, Bootle, Lancashire
JONES, Letitia Head Married F 60 1841 CarnavanCarnarvonshire
JONES, William Son Single M 24 1877 Tailor Deaf & Dumb From Childhood CarnavanCarnarvonshire
POWELL, Letitia Grand Daughter Single F 11 1890 Bootle Lancashire

Questions:

1. What are the relationships in the 1891 census?
2. Where are William Jones jnr in 1891?
3. ditto Leitita Powell in 1891?

I suppose William Jones snr might be listed as a baker in 1881. Daughter Ann Jones might be with him. Perhaps son WIlliam too, although he could be Letitia's son perhaps?

Here is the information she told me:

The confusion is being caused by the fact there were lots of Welsh people in Liverpool at that time, and all the names were similar.

It was William Powell , Letitia Harris' father who was a baker.

William Jones was her uncle I don't know what he did, it appears that both of these men were deaf and dumb, so was her mother - Ann.

On Letitia Harris' maternal side we have her Granny Letitia Jones she was married to a sailor, I don't know his first name but what's the betting it was William?. We also have her mother Ann.

Then we have her father's side. William Powell a baker, we don't have anymore information on him. I suppose they may have met each other through being deaf and dumb, perhaps at a school, or, club.

Since Letitia Harris was born in 1890, Ann and William Powell would be together in 1901, they had other children and according to my mother Letitia H wasn't the eldest or, youngest, some of the names I remember are, Kitty, Mary, Louise, William, Owen, there may have been an Ann, I think it was 7 in all.

U.S.D is probably a city area code i.e. U???? South District, the Dingle is in the south of the city.

That's all I can think of at the moment, I am looking for my A-Z to see were some of these addresses are situated.

Hope this clears some of the confusion.
