Re: can you avoid buying all those certificates?
You can view census records on the internet, which are very useful for tracing your family. However, it would probably not be possible to use only the census. At some point you will need to verify a place of birth, a father's name, or mother's maiden name - and this is where you do need birth or mar...

Re: Picking up the trail.....
Hi One thing that readily comes to mind is how to trace female members of the family once they marry and change their surname. David W Hi David - welcome to the forum. Not sure about your question - if you are working backwards, then you will know the married name - it's the maiden name you need to...

There can...

American WDYTYA
Did anyone see the American version of WDYTYA with Sarah Jessica Parker on Sunday night? What an interesting programme it was. Amazing to have the Gold Rush AND the Salem Witch hunts in your genealogy. I found it particularly interesting because I think one of my Lancashire ancestors may have come f...

Hi John
If you can't find what you're looking for online, it would be worth employing a local researcher. There's a list of them at the back of Family Tree Magazine or Family Tree Monthly.

Re: Thomas Davies and Annie
Do you have a marriage certificate for Thomas and Annie? - this would verify the father's names.

Re: Change of trade/occupation
You do have to be careful about occupations. One of my ancestors has been described both as a "farmer" and then as a "tinker of no fixed abode". He turns up in a later census as a milkman. I have a feeling that the "farmer" description was a slight exaggeration! He was ...
