Re: How to search Dockyard Records
Thanks Jimmy WJW's first wife was Hilda Walter, married 14/3/22. At that time he was stated to be Driver RE which I'm assuming is Royal Engineers (there is a barracks not far from where, according to the marriage cert, they were living). I've been able to track Hilda back to her Grandmother Christia...

How to search Dockyard Records
Hi Folks Following on from my brick wall regarding my Grandfather I've now received his death certificate. I'm posting this as a kind of update for all those who helped and also to try and clarify my thoughts (and if I'm getting things horribly wrong I'd appreciate any guidance) It has confirmed a n...

Re: Finding my Grandfather...
Thank you BC Wench Suddenly so many avenues have opened up to explore! ….and to everyone who has offered assistance/thoughts. Thank you! I am a cab driver and I have, from time to time, picked up a lady who works for the British Genealogical society. I've learned never to ask her what she thought of...

Re: Interpretation of Marriage Certificate
Thanks for suggestions! This WJW is certainly a possibility but the Suffolk WJW's Marriage Cert has a complete match with his father's name. It also shows WJW father's occupation as Farm Labourer which is similar to the stated occupation of the Suffolk WJW on birth cert and 1901 & 1911 Census re...

Re: Was my Grandfather in the Military?
Thanks folks Yes a WJW appears in 1901 & 1911 with correct Father's name but living in Suffolk which is a good 100+ miles away from where he pops up in Chatham. Being in the services would be a good explanation for the move as there is an RE Barracks in the Medway Towns. I didn't know about the ...

Re: Interpretation of Marriage Certificate
Hi Peterd
Marriage year is 1922 - sorry I was a bit zealous in trimming. Location is Chatham and there is an RE base at Brompton Barracks.

Was my Grandfather in the Military?
Hi All I am trying to trace my family history down my Father's line.... I have got as far as the Marriage Certificate of my Grandparents, William James Wells & Hilda Walter. I am presently stuck trying to track back my Grandfather who married my Grandmother in 1922. Looking at his entry on the r...

Interpretation of Marriage Certificate
Hi All I am trying to trace my family history down my Father's line.... I have got as far as the Marriage Certificate of my Grandparents, William James Wells & Hilda Walter. I am presently stuck trying to track back my Grandfather. Hopefully I've managed to attach a clip of his part of the entry...

Re: Finding my Grandfather...
Now that is an interesting learning point. The 1939 record for Hilda Anderson is misspelt. Hilda appears as Andersn and she seems to have become 2 years younger. Can I ask what search criteria you used? And what source you are using? It took me a while to find her, ultimately searching for Janet and...

Re: Finding my Grandfather...
Grangers14. I am feeling very stupid just now as you have found Grandma and Aunty Janet! I have just realised that I was still looking for Hilda and William Wells in 1939 even though I knew (well had it in front of me anyway) that they divorced in 1937 and that Hilda remarried in 1938. Thank you so ...

Re: Finding my Grandfather...
I'm finding that there is a syntax for effective searching but have far from got the hang of it! I know that my Grandmother's parents lived at an address from 1922 to 1939 as they appear there on a Wedding Certificate in 1922 and on the 1939 Register but I cannot find them included in any Electoral ...

Re: Finding my Grandfather...
Father's name was James Wells. Father's profession was stated as Farm Labourer which kind of matches the census for the Suffolk family as that James Wells was stated to be a Shepherd.

ARC TBC Finding my Grandfather...
Hi All I am new to genealogy and trying to research down my father's line to establish (or otherwise) a family rumour of Maltese ancestry. I am principally researching using a combination of Findmypast, FamilySearch and the GRO website. I am the oldest sibling and my parents and dad's brothers and s...
