Re: Grandmother's paternity?! Advice needed
Hello again BC Welch Thank you for taking the time to help me. I don't think Alice registered Kathleen's birth from what my mum has been told....hence giving birth on her own apparently. The person who provided the information for Kathleen's passport had known her since a baby and had to have known ...

Re: Grandmother's paternity?! Advice needed
The ladies sharing a house with Alice on the 1939 census are all related and originate from London.
I'm assuming they've come up to the country to live while their husbands are in the war.

Re: Grandmother's paternity?! Advice needed
Hello B C Wench, thank you for helping me with this. I just automatically assumed that Kathleen would be in the ATS straight away in September 1939. I can't find her on the 1939 register. Kathleen married a George (another George!) Barrett. Her maiden name was Bick on both her marriage certificate t...

Re: Grandmother's paternity?! Advice needed
Hello BC Wench Yes Alice seemed to be in a house full of ladies. Kathleen went into service in WW2 with the ATS so she won't be on the register. Another interesting thing is, David Waters by this time is on the register as living in the public assistance institution in Ross. The story goes that Alic...

Re: Grandmother's paternity?! Advice needed
Hi Jimmy Kathleen married a George Barrett in 1952. The marriage certificate shows a line under father and father's occupation so no joy there. As for her birth year... her school admission records show she was admitted as a four and a half year old which confirms her 1914 birth? There has always be...

Re: Grandmother's paternity?! Advice needed
Oh my goodness maybe I should look at the whole thing differently. A baptismal record is something I haven't thought about....? Would that mean asking all the churches around Hole-in-the-Wall or is there a baptismal register somewhere? Gosh I feel like I really don't know where to start again now? S...

Re: Grandmother's paternity?! Advice needed
From reading an article in the "brick walls section", have now found that a law in 1928 meant you could apply for a birth certificate if father was happy to admit paternity? If that's the case....she can't be David's? Why would they not get her a certificate if she was their daughter other...

ARC TBC Grandmother's paternity?! Advice needed
I wonder if anyone who could help me with this intriguing story. I'm sorry it is lengthy! I want to see if I can solve the riddle of my grandmother’s paternity so will share what I do know …….. My maternal grandmother, Kathleen Bick, was born on 6th June 1914 in Hole-in-the-Wall, Herefordshire to Al...

Hello from Herefordshire
Hello My name is Sophie and I've been researching my family, on both sides, since 2012. On my mother's side there is one major stumbling block and it has prevented me from moving forward for years...... It is quite a lengthy story and I'm not sure where best to post it. Would it be appropriate here ...
