Re: Help with brick wall ancestor – Samuel Samson DAVIS, Lon
Why do you rule out the 1779 baptism at St. Mary's Whitechapel? Right name, age, neighbourhood ... could be worth another look. I'm interested in how your ancestor qualified as a doctor from such modest beginnings. The cost of medical training meant it was limited to a small self-perpetuating middle...

Re: Help needed reading census
Being married? There's no proof obviously but if his father Thomas was of the opinion that the child wasn't his he might have used the original form to voice his suspicions. The Registrar dutifully filled in the main register from the form but the Superintendent Registrar may then have struck throu...

Good suggestion ... Being definitely looks correct ... Moved does too except that "Being Moved" doesn't make much sense in context

Help needed reading census
Can anyone decipher the added text on this 1851 census entry? ed51.JPG It reads: Edmund Williams, Bastard Boy (crossed out with some text above it), 7, a base child I am trying to read the text above Bastard Boy as it may give some clue as how Edmund ended up in this household. The record can be see...

Re: Best Museums to Visit
London has many great museums but the lesser-known Museum of London (part of the Barbican, near St. Paul's) is my favourite.

Re: incorrect marriage record
William was often abbreviated Wm (with the m small and sometimes raised) so if a similar approach were taken for Abraham it could have been mistranscribed as William. I've seen "Of Age" entered in the age column of a marriage so it's perfectly possible parental consent might have been reco...

Maybe they moved to Penrith. Unfortunately I think you might have to wait until 2021 for many of these questions to be answered. Here are the relevant images from the censuses - although I don't think they'll tell you anything you don't already know. 21, South Row Kells, Whitehaven, Cumberland for b...

Re: Starting again
One thing puzzles me - and I'm only asking this to make sure I have the right John Kitchen, not nit-picking your post - is that your father appears to have died aged 70 yet you said he got cancer at 73. England and Wales Death Registration Index 1837-2007 Name John Kitchen Event Type Death Registrat...

Re: Starting again
Which leaves me back with the 14 year old. I'd previously discounted this one because of her age. Is a 13 year old likely to have gone into service then? Maybe she was "taken advantage of" and shipped off to the mother and baby home to avoid the scandal although she obviously brought the ...

Re: Glamorganshire/South Wales detectives needed
I'm aware this thread has now become more of blog documenting my discoveries and don't object to it being closed. There were only two possible Margaret Joneses registered in Bridgend who could have been 8 for the 1851 census. Unfortunately they were both registered in the same quarter and there's no...

Re: Glamorganshire/South Wales detectives needed
The 1851 record for Margaret isn't convincing. Her birthplace is given as Llangadog, Carmarthenshire which is completely different from all recorded birthplaces (Pontypridd, Newbridge, Llantwit Farder/Vardre, Llantwit Major). I kind of assumed her father Thomas was alive at the time of her marriage ...
