Wonder if anyone can shed any light on this. Found in 1861 a census for Streatham that lists John Ryan bootmaker with wife Ellen and children born in Ireland. Ok marriage certificate has arrived. Confirms James Ryan born Jan 1837 st marys liverpool. Father John Ryan bootmaker. So now have to trawl 1841 census for a John Ryan boot maker with toddler - wish me luck

I tried that. Cannot find any census record
. I do know that in 1857 he joined the Army- attestation papers show enlistment to Royal Irish 86th in Dublin. But Helen and John are proving hard to trace... I'm determined to crack this one!
