Thanks Aunt Em, that's excellent. However, I am also interested in the fact you have found a premises in Old Hill spelt the same. That's a first for me and removes the' comfort blanket' associated with the spelling of the name.

Re: Horse Shoe Colley Gate for Old Bill
What a fantastic chronology Linell! Thank you. I am encouraged by your findings. I was aware of the Moles being associated with the premises but I did not go back to mid 1800s. I now believe, taking into account the 1871 census revelation connecting the Horse Shoe to Bedcote Street; that Philip's pu...

Re: Horse Shoe Colley Gate for Old Bill
Hi linell, Yes I saw your message thanks and I see now, that it must have been a sizeable manor in its day. I agree with you that we are in the right area and if I were a betting man, I would say the Horse Shoe mentioned in the 1871 census is the one referred to in 1908 kellys. The only way I can th...

Re: Horse Shoe Colley Gate for Old Bill
Yes. The 1871 Census lists the Horse Shoe Inn in Bedcote Street. Then i believe it disappears. Perhaps the road is renamed but in 1908 the name of the pub comes up again in Kellys listed under Colley Gate with Philip 'running it.' I also see the name of the premises is shown as two words in both the...

Re: Horse Shoe Colley Gate for Old Bill
I think Jimmy has reinforced my own thoughts regarding The Colley Gate Inn. Ie. the Colley Gate Inn is not the Horse Shoe. Frederick looks to be Philip's nephew and I am conscious Philip had an uncle Ezra born abt 1842.
Thanks Aunt Em for putting me right regarding 'North East Side'. Fantastic!

Re: Horse Shoe Colley Gate for Old Bill
In 1881 Census, Philip is living at 45 Windmill Hill H & S. Does anyone know what the H & S stands for? If anyone has access to the manuscript copy of the Census, I would be interested on your thoughts after your perusal.
Thanks yet again.

Re: Horse Shoe Colley Gate for Old Bill
Thank you all so much for your efforts.
The Bedcote Street reference is encouraging but putting my synacal head again, I cannot rule out linell's thoughts. Would Bedcote Street go under the Colley Gate district? I believe the street has gone but does anyone know if it has been renamed?

Re: Horse Shoe Colley Gate for Old Bill
Thanks Peter and Linell. It is the Jonathon CRAMPTON (1720) line that I am interested in. The whole line is recorded on BCC but I haven't as yet checked archives. Before doing this or contacting the premises, I would like to exhaust all efforts to trace the location. I am so grateful for all the hel...

Re: Horse Shoe Colley Gate for Old Bill
Thanks to everyone that has posted information. It really is appreciated! I have traced the family line through the usual sources and your enquiries corroborate all your my findings. I note a couple of issues which I will research further. Namely, the matter of Ezra's Windmill Hill connection. I had...

Hi..New User
Hello....at this time I am researching a public house recorded in the 1908 Kelly's Directory as the Horse Shoe, Colley Gate . The licensee at this time was Philip Henry CRAMPTON. I have found no other reference to this premises and cannot positively establish where it was within the area. However, I...
