Hi Ben,

I'm pretty sure it says "Her X mark", denoting the fact Mary was illiterate. About 50% of my rural ancestors did the same on certificates.

Both are points I'm all too aware of. I'm actually a professional web coder, so HTML, PHP and SQL stuff is fortunately all pretty trivial to me. I am however completely inept at anything artistic, always have been, and probably always will be I've got it in mind that, as and when the forum actually ...

why the need for yet another forum? To be honest, the main reason for setting it up in the first place was the fact there didn't seem to be any decent UK specific forums with good levels of functionality. With regard to search engine listings - the site now appears very high on Google's UK ranking....

Hi Juliette, The first place to check would be the Commonwealth Wargraves Commission website:- http://www.cwgc.org/ It sounds pretty likely that he was forced to go back and fight, and may have been killed in action. If that's the case, you should find him listed on the CWGC site. If not, let me kno...

Hi Clare, >leslie philip BURGESS Born 1900 - 1930 Died 1985 Do you know exactly where the death and/or burial occured? I've just checked 1837online, and there are only two Leslie BURGESS deaths in 1985. One's a Leslie Charles recorded October, the other's just recorded as Leslie in November, Grimsby...

She appears to be in Rudford Road, Deptford St Paul (born Rotherhithe) in 1891. Let me know if this sounds right and I'll PM a link to the original census image.

There seem to be virtually no references to this name on any of the common search sites. Does this relate to recent years? If so, there's someone (which I guess could well be you) on http://www.genesconnected.co.uk interested in the same name.

As a professional webmaster, I'm all too aware how difficult it is to get initial traffic to a site these days. The site does actually have a Google adwords program running though, and also now seem to be climbing it's way up search results. The main thing though is that until there's a significant ...

I'm a member of http://www.raogk.org/ , and some of the things you end up doing can inevitably get pretty involved and/or time consuming. I must admit, there have been times recently when I've felt exactly the same. I think unfortunately, within the last couple of years, genealogy has gone from bein...

It's funny you should mention that Chris - I'm using the same thing, and find it far easier to use than most others, yet it seems to have a relatively (no pun intended ) small user base. The user interface with most packages seems to be slightly counter-intuitive. Doing things in tree form is so muc...
