Re: Proable False Paternity event - how to narrow down?
Hi there, yes, I've gone down all of those routes. I am aware of GRO's search capability and have used it to confirm maiden names before. The problem I have is that genealogically speaking I have hardly anything to go on. The Gt Grandmother's surname is Brown, which for a start is horrendously commo...

Proable False Paternity event - how to narrow down?
As well as researching my own family, I've been doing my wife's as well. Like me she has done an Ancestry DNA test, and her family tree on both her parents side is now very extensive. However, she's had two DNA matches from roughly the same area of London. Both families are also very well mapped out...

Re: Practical indications of a DNA result
We've broached the subject with the other DNA match and am at the point of sharing tree access. We both agree that there is definitely a false paternity event somewhere very close, the odd thing is that apart from each-other they do not seem to share any other DNA matches. I particular a 2nd cousin ...

Re: Practical indications of a DNA result
Interestingly my wife has a 2nd cousin on her mother's side who has also done the Ancestry DNA (and is a keen genealogist). I hit upon the idea of asking him to see if this mysterious woman was on his list of DNA matches. If she was a descendant of my wife's maternal uncle, then he would have her as...

Re: Practical indications of a DNA result
Damn, forgot to scroll! Yes I see the indication now. No, she hasn't got that on any of hers, so I'm pretty certain it's because your mother has had a test too.

Re: Practical indications of a DNA result
Hi peterd. Yes she gets one of those, but I can't see either from mine, or from yours where it indicates whether it is maternal or paternal. In this case we think we have a suspect. My wife's male 1st cousin on her mother's side (my wife's mother's nephew). We keep thinking of him as an Uncle becaus...

Re: Practical indications of a DNA result
I'm not sure what your comment about my wife's line means, as my wife is the only person in her family who has had a DNA test. She does have a maternal uncle who was in the Forces in the 60s though, so I guess that's a possibility if he was in London at that time. I suppose this sort of thing is goi...

Re: Cousins estimate vs Genealogy estimate [Solved]
Her percentage of DNA shows an 8% probability that she's a 3rd Cousin, which is what the genealogy says. OK so that's a small chance, but it's not zero, so I'll go with that.

Practical indications of a DNA result
Hi all. An intriguing DNA match has come up on my wife's results. Someone with a match of 459cM which Ancestry kindly flags as a possible 1st/2nd Cousin. However there are some difficulties with this. This person is exactly the same age as my wife, which would indicate (looking at the site DNAPainte...

Cousins estimate vs Genealogy estimate [Solved]
I've been corresponding with someone who, according to our research shares the same 2nd Gt Grandmother as me. This would ordinarily mean 3rd cousins, but there are two different 2nd Gt Grandfathers, so from a DNA perspective that would show us as 4th Cousins. However she has recently taken the Ances...

Re: Tracing a living adoptee
Thanks for that. Very helpful. I'd been to the .GOV page but missed that document. EDIT: For future reference if anyone asks the question again, there's two sections to fill in - one if you're the adoptee (and the fee is £15), and one if you're a birth relative (fee is £30). The register is designed...

Tracing a living adoptee
Apologies that this isn't strictly a genealogical request, but I'm after advice and can't seem to find it anywhere. All my web searches seem to turn up sponsored links to "Find your family" sites. Can anyone point me in the direction of the process for getting in contact with an adoptee re...

Re: Marriage Records Question
That's an interesting catch. It's quite possible that his middle name is William and he is the father. If so, then Mary Jane is pretending that she's married to him and putting his correct details on the certificate in order to legitimise her child. I shall investigate this Charles Hill further. Tha...

Re: Marriage Records Question
Well most of the details are here: http://www.genealogyforum.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=78&t=10050 I'm pretty certain they weren't actually married. In fact I'm tending towards the idea that Charles William Hill may well have been fictional...or even that Mary Jane Robinson could be as well. I ...
