After obtaining 5 different birth certificates to get a positive ID on a mother's maiden name: Nott, Knott, Knox, etc, I finally turned to wedding certificates looking for a match. Which proved more fruitful. I finally found the marriage certificate for my 4-great grandfather Joseph Baker and Ann Kn...

Margaret Jane Mattinson (18.07.1861) - COMPLETED

Please could I ask for a bit of guidance on my great-great grandmother Margaret Jane Mattinson? She married my g-g-grandfather Richard Wilson Cross Boocock (1857–1903) on 26 June 1882 in Barrow in Furness, Lancashire, England. When he died, she went on to marry a Mr. James Hodgson in 1909. Sadly, he...

Re: 1901/1911 Census Request - Arthur BAKER (Handsworth)

There is an Arthur Baker who was born about 1875 married an Ada. I wonder if that could be him? He is a complete mystery to our family so I'd gladly order any 'likely' marriage certificates to try and gleam some more information! Shame that both Arthur and Baker were such common names during that t...

Oh! Thanks for looking Jimmy. Did he die or is he just being elusive I wonder? No sign of him on the 1901 census?

Hi Jimmy,

I don't have the 1891 census stats yet - but I was just hoping to find him a little later in life!

Thanks,

Re: Advice on apprenticeship ages and chronology

I may well be wrong, but I think some trades required the payment of a final sum to finish an apprenticeship, or to join the guild that then allowed you to trade under your own name. Until that sum was paid technically one was still an apprentice. I understand that some employers would pay that sum...

Advice on apprenticeship ages and chronology

Hello forum, I have the following information on my direct ancestor Henry BAKER (d.1757) who was a silversmith in Lichfield in the 18th Century. I wanted to ask a question about his apprenticeship and the age he would have been when he finished it. It seems strange that he had had FOUR children alre...

Jo :)

Hi Jo,

No I don't think she married before. I do know she was born in Carlisle and since there is a marriage with a Robert Mattieson around the right time (in Carlisle) I'm hoping this is the correct match! :)
