Hi Guys, I've managed to trace the Laing family tree back to Alexander Laing (b:1696), who married Ann Ruchart (b:1698). Now this is where the trail dies for me. To be certain that the facts that seem to hang together are correct you will need to get some birth certificates to show parentage (unless you are lucky and can find more baptisms) and marriage certificates which will hopefully give leads on fathers and their occupations. So the weird middle name Laws in our Laing family name looks like it could be a dual surname, Laws Laing? Wow.

Jimmy! Excellent news and so fast in replying! Thomas Laws Laing could be the guy! Thomas is the name of my father's brother and Laws Hmm... is a very distinct name. So Having Thomas & Laws together must be a very positve indication that Thomas Laws Laing is the father of James Michael Laws Lain...
