Re: missing birth record?
Thanks Jimmy, that's definitely them on the 1871 Census at Warner St, Aston, and I can also find Alice on every census up to 1911. But why can't I find her birth record? (I think I found Mary Ann's, just need to buy the birth cert to be sure). Hi Fiona, I have exactly the same problem with my grand...

Re: birth registration
Thanks Maggie, I have emailed Barnardo's - a long shot but worth a try. I have come to the same conclusion as several of you (yes James his "father" died in 1885) that he was taken in from somewhere else. If so the task is almost impossible. There are very few male Apteds that fit the bill...

Hello
Hello to everyone.
I have to say thanks already, as I posted a query last night and already received dozens of replies. This will obviously be a very useful forum, and people are very willing to help, so hopefully I in my turn will be able to help others.

Re: birth registration
Thanks to everyone for all the help - it has all happened very quickly which is wonderful and I am grateful to you all for trying. Unfortunately I already have all this information - everything except the Registration of his birth. There is an ambiguity of the date - could be either 1986/87/88, depe...

*ARCHIVE?* birth registration
My problem is that I cannot find a birth registration. My grandfather Averal James Apted was born on 17th February 1886 (according to him). However, the first record of his existence appears in the 1901 Census aged 13, next being baptised at the age of 14 the following year. I have details of marria...
