Returning member saying hello

hi all, just sorting out an old laptop for my eldest to use for schoolwork, and found this forum was still logged on the internet tabs bar. Had a look, and I've not been on for 10yrs! Oops! I'm still doing the digging into my family history, and keenly waiting for the 1921 Census to be released next...

what did a 'Carman' do?

hi all, hope you can help. Have got the marriage cert for my gt gt g/father, William Allen who was married in 1887, aged 26. It states that both him, (and his father) had the occupation of 'Carman' - what was a Carman? Also, his father in law was a Coal Porter - what was one of those? cheers, Claire

Re: Brick wall - Stratton (later Usher) 1876

I decided to order the birth certificate for the 'un-named' male Stratton born in 1874. Here's what it said : Registratio...

Re: Brick wall - Stratton (later Usher) 1876

oooh, the plot thickens then. I think that Lillian could be 16m, not 16yrs on that other census, makes sense. Might have to splash out on the 1911 census and see if William is still alive then. Mind you, it still doesnt explain why Frances Stratton (later Usher) called herself a widow on her marriag...

Re: Brick wall - Stratton (later Usher) 1876

Can you have a close look at the marriage cert again. "Daicuss"???? Cohabitation was quite common in Australia as it could take a long time to confirm a missing husbands death or abandonment. well, thats what the word looks like on the marriage cert - heres some photos of it and put it on...

Re: Brick wall - Stratton (later Usher) 1876

Think I'm rambling now, he seems to be married in 1891! Just ignore me lol, he could have remarried! I've just been on the IGI site and found the census return that you are referring to for 1881, Sutton is a small place, so its a serious coincidence that someone with the same name, of the right age...

Re: Brick wall - Stratton (later Usher) 1876

well the 1871 info is deffo right, and the 1881..... very interesting!! It makes him roughly the right age, as he was born around 1848 going by the info I've got (christened in 1849), and I think in the older census's they rounded peoples ages either up or down from what I've read. So, did he do a b...

Re: Brick wall - Stratton (later Usher) 1876

Hi Claire/Guinney The 1881 census states that Frances Stratton is married, not that she is a widow. If you don't have a copy then feel free to send me a private message with your email and I'll send you a copy of the image. Could you post the full details from the two marriage certs if you have the...

Re: Brick wall - Stratton (later Usher) 1876

.... summat else is bugging me now...... what if Albert (b1879) and another son called George (who died in infancy in 1880) were illegitimate and weren't the sons of William Stratton at all because he died before they were born? Blimey, Frances could have been the village bike!! lol Claire Usher (St...

Re: Greatest Military disasters

my great grandfather, George Herbert Allen (b1893) survived the siege of Kut in Messopitamia (Iraq?) in WW1. His commander was pleading for the British to send them help, but it never came despite promises, and they were massacared by the Turks. Apparantly the last animal to survive was the commande...
