His birth was an estimate from the census based on their reported age.

Cutting off the top of the tree to encourage new growth it is called Pollarding

Thanks for suggestion Jo, Of the two witnesses I was unable to find any leads for one and the other was the brides mother. Re your note that the 1841 census showed the occupation fitter - the 1871 shows white smith and publican - the 1861 shows fitter and victualler The 1857 mc of William's daughter...
