Thanks for the help
Just a sumo-sized thanks to the stupendous Linell and the others of you who contributed to the resolution of the (now archived) Mary Tickle topic. I have some tidbits about Mary and Charlie that I"ll post on the Social board when I get a moment.

Re: Mary Tickle b. 1834 Rowley
Just a thought - I find that when talking to people of my mothers generation (she's nearly 80) they all seem to use womens maiden names when talking about them. this had led to many a cconfusing conversation between us. It could be that your relatives always refered to Mary as Mary Tickle we...

Re: Mary Tickle b. 1834 Rowley
I'm not sure that is the right one on BCC Pete - she is born abt 1834 but Simmadonna's great aunt mary was most likely about the age of her garndmother surely? So born about 1896ish. That 1881 family looks interesting though. 2nd marriage? Anyhow. Question is was Tickle even her maiden name? Or was...

Not that I've ever heard of. Nor can I find any evidence of such a marriage. I'm kind of stumped.

Re: Halesowen SOUTHWELLS et al.
Oops. I made a mistake. See the statement highlighted in purple below: I'm feeling gratified to have found the footprints of my Black Country grandmother, Edith Mary SOUTHWELL (b. Bloomfield St., Hawne 1896), before she boarded the Lusitania in 1911 (aged 16) with her mother. Alice Jane Farmer South...

*ARc tbc* ----Mary Tickle b. 1834 Rowley
I'm having trouble finding a connection between the Halesown SOUTHWELL family and Mary TICKLE (b. 1834 Rowley, father Richard Tickle b 1814, m. James Portman 1860). My grandmother, Edith nee SOUTHWELL Hall (b.1896 Hawne), used to tell me when I was a kid that I had a great aunt Mary Tickle, a name t...

Re: Black country words and phrases
Has anyone heard the noun "pleasantine" for a bouquet of flowers? Could that be a Black country expression?

Re: Black country words and phrases
My grandmother had severe asthma all her life and when she'd get short of breath she'd say she had "the tizzick." Because she had to take cortisone to control her asthma she would get swollen legs and ankles and say they were "all swole up." If her arthritis was bothering her she...

YES! That sounds about how she used to phrase it. You're making me laugh and cry at the same time. Thanks. Shelley

Re: Halesowen SOUTHWELLS et al.
I grew up in Hawne, around the corner from Bloomfield Street, know it well. Linell. That is so cool it makes me shiver. Did you go to the grammar school there? My grandmother did and told me some hair-raising (literally, since the schoolmaster picked her up out of her seat by the hair) stories abou...

Greetings from Massachusetts
Greetings and thanks for reading. And thanks especially to administrator Northern Lass for guiding me to this forum. I am mainly interested in learning more about my Black Country ancestors with the name SOUTHWELL and, by extension, HACKETT, FARMER and HOLLOWAY. I have already identified most if not...
