Re: James Polkinghorn

Thanks Jimmy It looks as though they had settled in America by 1908, and had spent the summer in England (entered UK June and left for US in Oct.). Cecil John J Polkinghorne was born Dec. 1903 in Truro, so would be 4 years old in 1908, so that fits. I can't see a connection with my relative - will k...

Re: James Polkinghorn

Have tried to find a birth for Cecil about 1893 (+/- 2yrs) but no matches. Also the 1901 census only lists one Cecil born 1900 in Truro, so that's not him. Also Kate is not listed as a family member. Anyone find anything different? The only scenario that would fit is if she had twins in 1893, regist...

Re: James Polkinghorn

Thanks a lot for that, Jimmy. It looks as though Kate and Cecil were travelling together, and she is the right age to be my relative, but the wrong nationality. Also I have no knowledge of Cecil as a family member, so I would have to conclude that they belong to a different Polkinghorn line. Cheers S...

Re: James Polkinghorn

Thanks Dianel and Jimmy for that lead. I have found a record of a kate POLKINGHORN emigrating to Boston from Liverpool on 05-Oct-1908. There is no age/DOB listed, she is 'single' and her occupation is 'wife'(!). All that can be gleaned from that is she is likely to be an adult. There was a chap call...

Re: James Polkinghorn

Thanks again - you guys are obviously pretty good detectives. John was born to her in April 1893, out of wedlock. No paternal details on the birth cert., her maiden name is said to be 'schent' and she is said to be a 'housekeeper'. There is an address 'Back Queen Street' (no number) Dalton. It no lo...

Re: James Polkinghorn

Thanks again for your help. Her father is named John (a farmer) on the marriage cert. The name Gschwind(t) may have been pronounced without the 'G' and I found her (I think) in 1881 listed as Kate SCHWEND in Bradford aged 19 years. She appears to be an economic migrant, originating from Wurternburg,...

Re: James Polkinghorn

Thanks a lot for your help on this. James POLKINGHORN married Katherina GSCHWIND(T) in 1882 and really this posting is about her. She was born in Germany about 1860, and lived with James in Dalton-in-Furness, but was widowed in 1890. The 1891 census lists her as Kate POLKINGHORN,widow, age 30, living...

(Completed) James Polkinghorn

(James) Polkinghorn (formerly of Redruth, Cornwall) but in 1881 had migrated north to Dalton-in-Furness, where he married a German lady called Katharina. Anyone with any knowledge of her?
