Here is a wee bit of history for you. An extract from a news paper in 1867. Below is the reason i am interested in this particular pub.

"FATAL ACCIDENT AT ROUND OAK:- On Tuesday afternoon, a lad, named James Henry Arthur, a coal loader, was playing, in company with several others, on a siding, near the Earl of Dudley's canal wharf, Round Oak. Whilst running among a number of trucks that were lying there, an engine knocked him down and passed over him, severing the right leg a little below the knee.

There was also a deep incised wound, running from the knee to the loins. The unfortunate lad was conveyed to the Round of Beef Inn, and the assistance of Mr.Corbett, surgeon was obtained. Whilst this gentleman was examining the boy, Mr.Fereday, surgeon of Dudley, passed, and a consultation was held. It was then determined not to amputate the limb, in as much as the lad was not expected to survive many hours, even if the operation was performed.

The poor lad succumbed to the injuries received, and an inquest was held in Thursday, at the Round of Beef Inn, before Mr.W.H.Phillips, deputy coroner. After hearing the evidence, from which it appeared that no one besides the poor lad himself was to blame the jury returned a verdict of "Accidental Death".

My Great Grand father, George Kendall, kept this pub from 1917 until 1922. My Grandad always spoke about an incident that happened before he was born. He was born in 1928, and 6 months later his father died. He had another 2 brothers called George and Joseph. Joseph sadly passed away after a horrific accident in the pub. My Grandfather was always told he fell into an open fire at a young age inside the Round of Beef.

I have recently aqquired Josephs' death certificate and it states on cause of death "Shock following burns accidentally sustained through desceased's clothing taking fire. Lived 39 hours." The Address is listed as The Round of beef inn, 1 Wallows Street, Round Oak, Brierley Hill".

The story was that his father (George senior) picked up the injured toddler, and ran with him to Dudley Guest hospital, which is about 4-5 miles away. I can only imagine the horror and emotional pain caused by such a tragic accident.

I also have another 2 partial photos which i will ask the owner of if i can upload them to this site. It shows The Round of Beef being used as a soup kitchen by a previous landlord of the name of John Tandy, a very pious, devout Christian who took pity on the many poor families in the area in 1912.
