ARC TBC Benjamin HILL

Post by Michelleb »

I'm struggling to find info on my 4 x g grandfather, Benjamin Hill bn abt 1801. I have him in the 1841 census at New Street, Rowley Regis living with wife Ann (nee Williams) and their children. Benjamin must have died between 1841 and 1851 as Ann is listed as widow on the 1851 census.
I looked at Benjamin being the son of Timothy Hill (bn 1780) and Maria Hipkiss who married in 1800 (I haven't found any proof of this I have just looked at dates, area etc) I've looked up their trees on Black Country Connections and it states that it's believed Benjamin and Timothy are brothers although not proven.
I wonder if anyone could advise me how I can move forward
regards
Michelle

Could this be his death?
22nd October 1844, St Giles, Rowley Regis.
Benjamin Hill, 44, Lawrence Lane, Killed in Pit

There are some articles in some newspapers. There was an explosion in a pit at Five Ways, Cradley Heath

I've just read a newspaper report and it says Benjamin Hill is the father of Emanuel Hill (who was injured in the explosion) but I don't have an Emanuel in my tree. I've had a look on BCC and there is an Emanuel, bn 1820, son of Benjamin Hill and Phoebe ? I would presume this is the unfortunate family in the awful accident. Thank you for looking though

I hadn't read that when I was looking! Sorry.
I will look a bit more and could possibly be something for BCC.
So you need more help!

Yes, I've come to a stand still with Benjamin now. I'm unable to find his parents or any possible siblings

I have had another quick look on the newspapers and although it does say an Emanuel Hill I could not see it was his father? I may have missed that? I don't think it is the Benjamin Hill on BCC as they were nailors and he is still alive in 1851.

I looked on the black country muse https://www.blackcountrymuse.com/apps/f ... n+G.+Higgs as opposed to a newspaper report.
Thank you for looking for me, it seems Benjamin will remain a mystery for some time yet.

I see it says that there? The newspaper reports I looked at did not.
See if we can see Benjamin and Joseph together on census. To rule out?
The one you thought on BCC were nailors and Benjamin still alive after the explosion.

Joseph? I have Benjamin, on the 1841 census, with his wife, Ann, and children. The 1851 census has Ann as widow. I can't find anything on Benjamin's parents or siblings.
I see what you mean about the other Benjamin who I thought may have been involved in the explosion
