Re: William Hadley and Harriet, Dudley

Hello
I received a response yesterday telling me I had emailed the wrong department. The correct department replied within 20 minutes. Non of the Sarah's mentioned above, nor the ones I had, were the Sarah with parents William and Harriet. However the one I found for Esther Hadley was correct, so I shall be ordering that this weekend and it will give me Harriet's maiden name, and hopefully the connection to Belper.

In the mean time, I have set my Uncle to work. He has been researching for years but never did much on the Dudley branch. But I have awakened his interest and he has found the following. I have no idea how accurate it is, but seems rather possible if nothing else:

1841 Census Eve Hill Dudley
Thomas Rose age 50 born 1791 worc. possibly a blacksmith?
Jane Rose age 60 born 1781 worc. a Nailer
William Hadley age 21 born Worc. a Nailer

William Hadley born 9/1/1820 cr. 13/10/1822 St Thomas Dudley of Martin Hadley and Sarah
Martin Hadley born 26/1/1800 at Halesowen Worc. to Jane Hadley {before she wed}
Jane Hadley married Thomas Rose 26/12/1805 Clemt Worc.

1841 Census Eve Hill Dudley
Martin hadley age 40 Nailer
Sarah hadley age 40
Hannah Hadley age 17
Joseph Hadley age 12
Sarah Hadley age 10
Mary Hadley age 8
Eliza Hadley age 4
John Rhodes {son in law} age 20
Ann Rhodes daughter age 18
Jane Rhodes age 1 {born june 1840 Dudley 18 273

John Rhodes married Ann Hadley June 1840 Dudley 18 400

1851 Census Snow hill Badger square Dudley
Martin Hadley age 51 Horse Nail maker born Dudley
Sarah age 51 Nail maker born Dudley
Sarah age 20 nail maker Dudley
Mary age 18 nail maker Dudley
Eliza age 14 nail maker Dudley
George age 9 nail maker Dudley
Hannah Hadley age 10 month Granddaughter Dudley
Ann Rhodes age 28 daughter nail maker Dudley
Hannah Rhodes age 1 Granddaughter Dudley

Then going further back from Jane Hadley:
Jane Hadley cr. 27 12 /1781 Halesowen of Betty Hadley
Betty Hadley cr. 20/7/1755 Halesowen of William and Mary

William Hadley married Mary Smallwood 13/4/1748 Halesowen
William Hadley married Mary Harden June 1745 Halesowen
(take your pick!?)

Thank you for re-opening this one for me Jan.

I have just received the birth certificate for Esther Hadley 1856. I thought it would solve the link to Belper, but it has not. However, Harriet was Harriet Beese. The best match I can find is Harriet Beese christened Dudley 30 May 1819 to parents Harris Beese and Elizabeth. 1819 and Dudley matches all the census returns she was on.

So moving backwards, Harris Beese married Elizabeth Timmins 14 Oct 1810 St Marys, Kingswinford. This seems likely to be them. Possible children being George Beese 1813, Harriet Beese 1819, James Beese 1823. All christened in Dudley. James appears to have married Elizabeth Whale 27 Dec 1850 Church of Lower Gornall, Stafford. Father of Groom shown as Harriss Beese.

Would someone with access to Ancestry be kind enough to have a look at Harris Beese? From the family trees section preview some people appear to suggest he was born in Gloucestershire, and they also list parent names for him (blanked out for me). Someone else on Genes appears to back this up with Hanham, Gloucestershire. There are too many Elizabeth Timmins in the Black Country to have a clue which is the correct one.

Many thanks
Julian

Bingo, so William and Harriet's parents were both living in the same street in 1841 and then again in 1851.
This all but confirms I have the correct people.
Thank you so much.

To be honest I don't understand your archive process. The information that "grangers14" provided is fantastic. I am obviously going to keep digging because it is my family. If I find out more should I ask for it to be unarchived or is this only of interest to me? Thanks again for all the assistance!

Hi Julian this section of the board moves really quickly
have a read here
viewtopic.php?f=29&t=851

so any post you want brought back then yes just ask and we will bring it back.
If you are still working on it and need more info then it can stay here while you post info
but if you are waiting for certifs or look ups then it gets archived.

so if you need more on this thread then just say
if you have more to add over the next day or two then say
if you are done with it till more info comes your way ..................just say

does that help?

Thanks.

I have more updates. Harriet was also living in the same place (Badgers Square) in 1841 census. By 1851 they have children Sarah Hadley and Ephraim Hadley. Only the marriage between William and Harriet, and the birth certificates for Sarah and Ephraim are nowhere to be found. However, it has been pointed out to me that there is record of a Sarah Beese 1842 and an Ephraim Beese 1847 in Dudley. And there is a marriage between a William Hadley and a Harriet Beese in Dudley in 1876, two and a bit years before William dies. I don't have proof, but these look like the missing bits of my jigsaw.

Feel free to archive.
Thank you.

Thank you FarSide!

I checked the marriage 1876 for William Hadley and Harriet Beese with Sandwell, and it matches. The couple are the right age and fathers Harris and Martin, with correct occupations. So they got married three years before William died, yet said they were married in the census and on some of the children's birth certificates.

Confirmation from the birth certificates that Sarah 1842 and Ephraim 1845 were not given the name Hadley, but Beese. No father is mentioned on their birth certificates. By 1856 William and Harriet's daughter Esther is given the name Hadley, although they are still not married. Some time between 1845 and the 1851 census they decide to pretend to be married, and Sarah and Ephraim become Hadleys. I think Ephraim had two sons, so there is a fair chance there are people alive today with the name Hadley, who should technically be called Beese.

I think we all suffer from that Julian, none of us can be sure we have the correct surnames, the way our Ancestors changed their names to suit their circumstances is more common than we realise.
