Ann married Walter Williams and has their first child Daniel Leyshon Williams (transcribed Lishion in his civil registration) in 1871. On his civil registration Daniel’s father is a puddler (???) who can read and write and his mother Ann Williams formally Davies is illiterate. They live in forge row blaenavon glamorgan.

In 1881 Daniel who’s my 2 great grandfather lives with his uncle Walter Davies and his wife Ann (yes the same names as his parents ).

Now Walter Davies the uncle is either Walter christened to David and Catherine 14 Sep 1834 (maiden name Williams) in Llansamlet or the one christened to Leyshon Davies and Ann also in Llansamlet 28/10/1833 . Given the constant use of Leyshon as a name in this family it would seem most likely that it’s the Walter to Leyshon and Ann.

This however is where it gets tricky: Leyshon has died by the time Ann Davies who marries Walter Williams would come along so Walter Davies can’t be the uncle of Daniel Leyshon Williams- unless he’s the GREAT uncle of Daniel and his brother or sister is Ann’s parent. Making Walter Davies the uncle of Ann Davies married name Williams.

Do you have the marriage certificate to know who can read and write? If they signed or made a mark?
A birth record doesn't show that. It is the registrar who writes it.

When Daniel Lishion (stet) Williams was registered in 1871 it says Walter Williams and Ann Williams formally Davies. Informant the mark of Ann Williams formally Davies and that’s where I’m getting that she’s illiterate but Walter isn’t.

Without knowing who this couple are there isn’t really a point getting a marriage certificate because although a Watkin Williams married an Ann Davies in 1870 in the right area, and Watkin could be Walter, there are families called Watkin Williams and spouse Ann living in the area in the census records later on and I don’t want to buy the Waylon and Ann marriage certificate if Watkin is REALLY Watkin and it isn’t Walter badly transcribed.


Also how do you order a marriage certificate on GRO anyway- have ordered Daniel’s registration but don’t know how to search marriages???

What do you know of Daniel?

I don’t know how to search marriage indices on GRO- it doesn’t give an option to search marriages. I’ve got to enter some reference to get one but don’t know what that code is

As you say you can`t search for marriages on the GRO site ,you need to look it up other sites- if you post on the forum some one may be able to give you details of the ordering info -get the info and send for a copy Kind Regards RF
