Thomas Henry Nicolls was born 27 May 1871 Kingswinford but no birth or baptism could be found.
He is my mother in law's grandfather.
We know that when he retired he had trouble claiming a pension as he couldn't provide a birth certificate.
His mother was Harriet Nicholls born 1843 Wombourne. Her birth cert shows her mother as Ann Nicholls and her father as Richard Egginton.
She was brought up by her father and his wife Mary, as Harriet Nicholls, but when she went into service she changed her name to Egginton.
Her first child, Mary Nicholls, was born 1867 Wall Heath, no father on the certificate.
In 1871 she was with the widowed Mary Egginton who was in service on Brook St, Wall Heath and later adopted by James and Elizabeth Cook in Weston Zoyland, Somerset.
Thomas was adopted by John and Eliza Cartwright of New St, Wall Heath and brought up as a Nicholls.
However, he was registered and baptised as Egginton, misspelled as Egginon on the birth cert - no father named. Hence the trouble finding his birth.
Recently I have found a close dna match for a descendant of John Weston to my mother in law, and also her first cousin.
I followed it up and found that in 1871 John Weston and his son Thomas are living on Cullis St, Brettel Lane, as is Harriet Egginton - they appear on the same census page. So I strongly suspect that Thomas's father is part of the Weston family, and Thomas Weston is my best guess as he is living there and is of a similar age to Harriet.

I also have marriage certs for Thomas and for his sister.
He says his father was John Nicholls, labourer and she says her father was Richard Henry Nicholls, farmer. I have always believed that these are made up names.

I am now tracing the Weston family, back to Andrew b. 1785 Baschurch, Shropshire so far, and just begun the Scott family, probably Caroline bapt 1815 Oldswinford.

To add a bit of spice, Thomas's sister Mary married down in Somerset and her mother in law was Elizabeth Flower Weston - but I think this must be just coincidence.

If anyone has already researched these lines I would like to swap notes.

Ann Nicholls the mother of Harriet seems to be a lodger with Thomas Southall in 1851 and then his "concubine" accord to enumerator
in 1861.
