LOAKES, LOAKE, LOKES, LOKE

Post by Loakesy »

Hi

Most of my research has been around the LOAKES family, so I'll start there.

For about 80 years, the LOAKES family lived in Witcham, in Cambridgeshire (about 5 miles from the city, and registration district, of Ely).

Giles LOAKES married Elizabeth LONG in about 1830.

His son Giles LOAKES is my greatx3 Grandfather - see my Brickwall post!

Giles Sr was born in Wollaston, in Northants in about 1786 to James LOKES and Mary MACEY. Their ancestors move throughout Northants.

There is a theory that I am very distantly related to the famous LOAKE shoemakers, of Northamptonshire.

Thank you!

<edit> I got Mary's surname wrong!

Hi Loakesy,

Have you visited Witcham, or are you from the area anyway?

I visited Witcham about 5 years ago, but didn't get to stay very long. Probably long enough to scan the gravestones of St Martins.

I would like to get back there, but with a young family it's not always easy.

I'm from Southeast London, so it's not a million miles away.
