I've been reading the newspaper reports on FMP on the cases in question and you know what, I feel a lot of empathy towards Isaac.
The eldest daughter, Rachel aged 13yrs had to look after her siblings in the absence of her mother, Sarah. It appears that Sarah frequented the house on a "hop and a catch" and that Isaac was trying to keep the family together.
Birmingham Gazette 18 March 1863
....Rachel wept as she gave evidence and said that her father was always kind and good, and that if their mother had been the same they should all have been happy and comfortable. Mr Hill for the defence alluded to the fact that the prisoner was, unfortunately, allied to a wife who neglected her duties and left them entirely to him. He had been kindly and indulgent to his children, and had tried, as far as he could, to supply the mother's place and it was not to be supposed that he could ever have contemplated injuring his child.....
If Isaac was so violent to his children, why didn't their mother take care of them, what was she doing!
If you search on the web "isaac thompson of sedgley" using the inverted commas, there's a book "A Horrid History of Christmas" which gives the details.
This looks like Sarah's father on BCC
