There is a marriage
West Midlands Marriage indexes for the years: 1880
WAKELAM John EVANS Selina Lower Gornal, St James Dudley Register Office 215/005/216

And I can see Selina Evans with him. May be if we follow that family see what that shows?

You say that this is your grandfather’s birth certificate:-

William Thomas Smith b 13th May 1891...
father John Smith Blast Furnace Engineer
Mother Selina Smith formerly Evans (x the mark...)

Ward Street Bilston

So you were looking for a marriage of a John SMITH and Selina Evans and bought the certificate:-

Marriage: 3 April 1876 at St Luke, Bilston
John Smith – 21 – Bachelor – Engine Driver – Bilston – William Smith – Keeper
Selina Evans – 20 – Spinster – Bilston – William Evans – Boatman
Wit: Charles Evans, Elizabeth Harris

Nothing at all to do with Wakelam or Hoggins as far as I can see.

As BC Wench says its another family. The address match on marriage and birth cert so the family is correct on BCC.
Selina Evans is another person.

ahhh ty very much both of you... and yes Grangers14 that was the other family...

I was sure the Selina we had worked out.. was.. the right one.. but when i came across that other bunch, well.. you can see why that lil niggle inside me made Me doubt myself? lol?

And one last question.... (then I can put selina.. to bed..so to speak lol)

Her Daughter Maria Elizabeth...
her free reg details were...

County Staffordshire
Place Bilston
Church High Street Primitive Methodist Chapel
RegisterNumber
DateOfBirth 08 Mar 1875
BaptismDate 28 Mar 1875
Forename Maria Elizabeth
Sex F
FatherForename
MotherForename Lena
FatherSurname EVANS <<<
MotherSurname
Abode Smith Street
FatherOccupation
Notes
FileNumber 36199

Where it has fathers name... Evans...thats not assuming that Marias actual dad.. is an "Evans" is it?? but because the mother herself.. is an Evans? (would be a lil odd.. but not unknown i guess.. that the dad too happened to be an Evans) ??

(and ty all for putting up with My stupid.. questions)

Maria Elizabeth must be an illegitimate child of Selina.

I have searched and searched for Selina and cant see her...may be she has been missed off or transcribed wrong? I wondered if she had been in hospital as there is a gap in ages of children and sometimes they are down just as initials but I couldnt see to be conclusive...
I have added the family you were questioning here to BCC.
